Pompeii Vesuvius and Herculaneum tour from Sorrento

Overview

Explore Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum in one day from Sorrento! Visit the old Roman town of Pompeii and climb on the Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed it. From Vesuvius summite you will get one of the best panoramic view on the Bay on Naples. Then after a stop for lunch (own expense) we will drive to Herculaneum for a visit to the famed archaeological site. Tour layout may vary due to traffic or special events on the specific day.

Please note: On the first Sunday of each month, admission to Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins is free and we can't reserve tickets in advance. They have to be bought on the spot and there will probably be a long line and there is also the possibility that tickets may sell out.

Journey Plan

The tour will start from Sorrento, as it's a private trip you will decide the pick up location, either from your hotel or any address in Sorrento or nearby towns. You will travel with an air-conditioned luxury sedan car or minivan driven by a professional English speaking local driver that will introduce you the history and main sights that you will see during your trip.

Departing from Sorrento we will drive you to Pompeii, here you will have 2 hours to vist the UNESCO-listed ruins of Pompeii. Buried under the pumice and ash of Mt Vesuvius’ 79 AD eruption, the once-thriving city remained preserved under the rubble. Today, it offers a fascinating look into ancient Roman life (entrance ticket at own expense). We suggest you to book an expert guide in Pompeii to better understand the importance of this archaeological site, the most important in the World! Guide is not included, the cost is 160 Euro for 2 hours.

Second stop is on the Vesuvius.The driver will take you up to about 1000 meters – 3280 feet from where you can decide if you would like to continue until the very top by foot with a local ranger guide (guided hike at own expense).  At the peak you can walk near the crater and take breathtaking pictures. Along the road with your driver, to reach the meeting point with the ranger, there are also other panoramic stops and various options where you can stop for lunch and taste the typical Neapolitan food.

After lunch (optional and at own expense) we will drive to Herculaneum, where unlike Pompeii, covered by a layer of lapillus and ashes, Herculaneum was submerged by a thick layer of lava and mud that preserved it all, sealing everything. If you would like also in Herculaneum you can book an expert guide. Guide is not included and the cost is 160 Euro for 2 hours.

The day trip will end by driving you back to Sorrento, on the road you can admire other great view of Sorrento's coast.
